Flower Power was a form of political symbolism, rooted in the Californian hippie movement of the late 1960s. What started as an action of protest against the Vietnam War soon became a widespread symbol of passive resistance and non-violence ideology. The expression was made popular by the American beat poet Allen Ginsberg, who advocated that war protesters should be provided with "masses of flowers" to hand out to policemen, press, politicians and spectators.
Flower Power is strongly associated with psychedelic art and music, album covers of that time have spectacular, vibrant colours, plenty of flowers, and funny and playful typology. While some of the covers shown here are meant to transport the Flower Power ideology for bands that actually originate in this movement, the majority of Flower Power album covers are just a marketing ploy by the music industry, intended to capitalize on an ideology that was quickly spreading from California all around the world.
