first Vanguard label (1953 - 1957)
The very first Vanguard label already introduced the famous lancer logo that was kept alive ever since. The label was red with a wide silver perimeter and '33 1/3 long play' printed with the label name in a silver horizontal strip left of the spindle hole. This first version was used for 10" records in the early and mid-1950s.
second Vanguard label (1956 - 1957)
The design was slightly changed for 12" LP records in the early VRS-9000 series. The rim text is now printed in silver on a red background with two silver circles enclosing it, and the text below the label name now says '33 1/3 long playing'.
third Vanguard label, mono (1958 - 1963)
The label design changed in the late 1950s with this maroon label. 'VANGUARD' was printed in wide block letters around the upper half of the label with the slogan 'RECORDINGS FOR THE CONNOISSEUR' printed below. The maroon label was used for mono releases, while stereo labels used a similar design with a black background and a new Stereolab logo that incorporated the lancer.

The lancer was moved to the bottom center. The principal colour of these labels was gold, but there are variations including a black version.
