Madison Records was founded in 1958 by Larry Uttal in New York City. Uttal owned and operated several record labels, including Madison Records and Private Stock Records, in the 1950's, 1960's and 1970's. In late 1961, he took over Bell Records, and its affiliates, Amy and Mala, and the Madison label was closed after releasing only two albums.
There was an earlier, unrelated Madison Records in the 1920s, which is not covered in this label guide. It was a subsidiary of Grey Gull Records that existed between 1926 and 1931.
