Memphis Records was a short-lived R&B label, founded in 1970, owned and run by soul legend Jerry Butler, former lead singer of The Impressions. Butler became involved with The Memphis Corporation who set up its Universal Recording Studios of Memphis and agreed to start a record label to accompany the studio. Memphis Records was run out of Chicago, but its artists base stayed in Memphis. The label was closed in early 1973.
There were several other, unrelated labels with the same name. Those are not covered here.
