Dakar Records was started in 1967 by Carl Davis, who was an accomplished R&B producer at Brunswick Records. Dakar had a long run of hits with Tyrone Davis and Bohannon. It was initially distributed by Cotillion Records, an Atlantic subsidiary, but in late 1971 distribution was moved to Brunswick.
When the Dakar label folded in 1976, Davis formed Chi Sound Records.
