Sussex Records was founded by producer Clarence Avant on December 18, 1969 in Hollywood, California. Avant signed Bill Withers, Dennis Coffey, and soft rock band Gallery to Sussex, which was distributed from April 1970 until 1974 by Buddah Records, and independently distributed until its demise. The company went out of business in June 1975, with the IRS seizing and auctioning off all assets because of $48,000 in federal tax liens.
