Egg Records was founded in 1969 as a subsidiary of the large French record label Barclay, most likely by initiative of Franz Auffray. The first, incarnation of Egg was very short-lived and only two albums were released: Auffray's project 'The Original Popcorn' and the related Cruciférius album (pre-Magma).
The label was relaunched in 1976 as a European Progressive Rock label, still under the helms of Barclay, focusing on French and German artists in the genre, as Conrad Schnitzler, Francois Bréant, Popol Vuh or Michel Magne. This second incarnation lasted for about five years with the last album release dating from 1981.
