EG Records started out as a UK-based artist management company 'E.G. Music', founded in 1969 by David Enthoven and John Gaydon (hence the name). Both were managers of King Crimson since 1969, later they also signed to management T. Rex, Emerson, Lake & Palmer and Roxy Music. Early albums by EG artists were mostly put on Island or Polydor Records in the UK, before EG started its own record label around 1977.
Founders Enthoven and Gaydon left the company and new owners Sam Alder and Mark Fenwick released plenty of albums by artists such as Roxy Music/Bryan Ferry, King Crimson, Brian Eno, Robert Fripp or the band UK. The label was sold to Virgin Records in 1991. When EMI bought Virgin in 1996, EG Records was consolidated into Virgin Records by the new parent company.
EG Records used custom label designs for many of its album releases, especially in the U.K., which are not featured in this label guide.
